Big Whirlpool: Hurricane Ian of Category IV photographed from the International Space Station

Overview

Hurricane Ian appeared in a stunning photo: this photo was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station ( ISS ).

When the photo was taken, the International Space Station was operating 258 miles over the Caribbean Sea east of Belize. At the time, Hurricane Ian was in the south of Cuba and was gaining strength and heading toward Florida.

Hurricane Ian was a large, deadly and destructive Category 4 Atlantic hurricane that caused widespread damage across western Cuba and the southeast United States, especially the states of Florida and South Carolina. It was the ninth named storm, fourth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.

Ian caused catastrophic damage in parts of Southwest Florida, mostly from flooding due to extreme storm surge and rainfall.
